The Northern Regional Police have mounted a search for “a gun dealer” after a pistol he was selling accidentally discharged and killed a 28-year old man Saturday.
The victim, Nurudeen Shaibu, of Dohinayili in the Tamale Central constituency died on arrival at the Tamale Teaching Hospital.
According to police, the supplier whose name was only given as Abdallah, on hearing the death of Shaibu fled Tamale.
Narrating the incident to Zaa News, the Public Relations Officer of the regional police command ASP Ebenezer Tetteh said the deceased requested to buy an unregistered gun from one Muazi Fuseini who then contacted Abdallah. Fuseini who has been arrested and detained is assisting police in the investigation.
ASP Tetteh said the suspect will be arraigned before court on gun possession charges, adding that it is illegal to carry any weapon or to engage in selling guns.
Ban on carrying of weapons and ammunitions in the northern region
Meanwhile the total ban placed on the use of all types of arms including hunting guns in the northern region by the ministry of interior for security reasons is still in force, according to the Police PRO, ASP Tetteh.
He reminded the public that it’s criminal for anybody to carry weapons, let alone engage in selling them. On whether the police are surprised about gun dealers in the region, ASP Tetteh said he is not surprised because there are areas in Tamale metropolis awash with guns and entreated citizens to report gun dealers to the police.
