Beginning on the 13th January, 2018, the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly will arrest and prosecute drivers and users of unregistered vehicles on the streets of Tamale, authorities have warned. According to the assembly, any commercial vehicle that plies the streets of Tamale must be registered by the Drivers and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA).
Briefing the media in Tamale, the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), Mr.Iddrisu Musah Superior stated categorically that the intention of the metropolitan assembly is not to arrest and prosecute the people of Tamale but to sanitize the city to be a focal point for local governance in Ghana.
According to him, it is illegal and criminal to drive a commercial or private vehicle within the metropolis, without it being accounted for by the DVLA. He said the exercise will be huge, effective and severe but appealed to commercialvehicle and tricycle owners to get their vehicles registered.
Eighty percent of tricycles (yellow yellow), and other commercial vehicles according to Mr Superior, are not registered. He said culprits will be arrested, prosecuted and jailed or fined. The metropolitan assembly, he said, is not undertaking the exercise alone but with the support from stake holders, the security taskforce and the DVLA.
He has also cautioned the general public to register their vehicles before the 13th of January and called on the media to inform and educate the public on the importance of registering their vehicles.
The Mayor also expressed his appreciation to the good people of Tamale, especially the chiefs and elders, for the overwhelming support offered him and his team to undertake the numerous clean up exercises in the metropolis.
He also urged them to continue to be law abiding citizens for the development of the metropolis and the region at large.
