The Northern Regional Command of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana police service has warned motorist in northern region to adhere strictly to road safety regulations or face prosecutions.
The warning follows what the MTTU described as persistent disregard of road safety and traffic regulations by motorist in the Tamale metropolis.
The MTTU on Wednesday embarked on an exercise in all the major streets of Tamale to arrest unregistered motor bikes, riders without crash helmets as well as riding without license. The exercise led to the arrest of fifty motor bikes in the metropolis.
The move, according to MTTU, was to ensure sanity on the road to avoid unnecessary road accidents in the region.
Addressing the media at the precinct of MTTU, the Northern Regional Commander of the unit, Superintendent Godwin Blewushie Cashman explained that, the exercise was to ensure that, motor riders wear crash helmets to save their lives and also to create awareness on the need to register and insure their motor bikes to enable them to claim their benefits from insurance companies.
Superintendent Cashman expressed worries over the lawlessness on the roads and warned that his outfit would deal ruthlessly with recalcitrant motorist in the metropolis to save lives.
The exercise which is the third to be carried out in the Tamale metropolis this year reveals that, many riders claim ignorance about collecting riding license, insuring their bikes and the need to wear crash helmets.
Superintendent Cashman took time to explain the rudiments of their operations of MTTU and also how to acquire motor bike license to the “offenders” who admitted committing various traffic offences and assured the police of good behavior. Out of the fifty motor bikes arrested, only nine had documents which the command described as “questionable documents” because it lacks details about the supposed owners. He however released some of the bikes to owners and warned motorist to register their bikes within one week or face prosecution.
Superintendent Cashman also entreat motorist to ensure that, the necessary documentations regarding change of ownership from the companies and individuals are done properly to avoid being prosecuted
