N/R: Inadequate female representation in MMDCEs nomination worrying- Executive Director of Norsaac

A Convener of Civil Society Platform on Good Governance Policy Mohammed Alhassan Awal has expressed dissatisfaction over the inadequate female representation as far as the nomination of metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies across the country is concerned.

 Out of the 260 nominees, 38 are females whereas 222 are males. Seven Municipal and District Chief Executives in the northern region have been re-nominated by the president for the second term. 

The seven are Abdul Salam Hamza Fatawu -Kumbungu, Ahmed Abubakari Iddrisu-Zabzugu, George Bingirini-Saboba, Abdulai Yakubu Nanumba North municipality, Alhaji Ahmed Yussif Abubakari-Yendi, Kpandai-Emmanuel Atta Tatablata and the only female in the 16 MMDAs in the northern region Hajia Ayishetu Seidu- Savelugu.

Reacting to the list in an interview with Zaa news, Mr Awal said the country’s commitment of having an inclusive development and ensuring that women participate in decision making is not improving, thus a concern and a worry for all.

 He said the constitution of Ghana instructs that gender balance is ensured in the recruitment and appointment to public offices. He said the inadequate women representation is very worrying, since this unfair treatment meted out to the female gender is becoming the norm.

He is thus, calling on President Nana Akufo-Addo to reconsider his nomination of the MMDCEs for the good of the country. Mr Awal who is also Executive Director of Norsaac wants nominees to perform their responsibilities diligently if they are finally confirmed.
