The King of Dagbon, Nadan Ya-Naa Abukari II, has eulogized the Speaker of Parliament for his commitment and dedication to duty as the Speaker and former Member of Parliament for the good people of Nadoli Constituency. The King believes the rich experience the Speaker has gained over the years and his neutrality as Speaker of the august house are the reasons the country does not often hear “Order! Order!” as it did on the floor of Parliament in the past.

Ndan Ya-Naa, on behalf of the Chiefs and good people of Dagbon, encouraged the Speaker to continue his good work. The King made the statement when the Speaker paid a courtesy call on him at the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi.

In an address read by the Registrar of the Dagbon Traditional Council, Alhassan Abdul Fatawu, the King congratulated the Speaker for his election as the Speaker of Parliament. His election, Nadan Ya-Naa noted, shows how well the country has embraced democracy as a choice of governance. The speaker, Nadan Ya-Naa, said he has so far demonstrated that his election was purely on merit and nothing else and expressed his satisfaction about his neutrality and fairness on the floor of Parliament.

Ndan Ya-Naa said the Dagbon Kingdom, in spite of efforts towards tackling our development challenges with development partners, has put together some strategies aimed at facilitating issues regarding the underdevelopment of the area. The steps include the review of the 1930 Dagbon Constitution, which has been in use for the past hundred years.

The King told the Speaker and his entourage that the all-inclusive constitutional review processes were completed and approved by both the Daghon Traditional Council and the Northern Region House of Chiefs. The reviewed Constitution, Nadan Ya-Naa added, is currently before the National House of Chiefs pending approval. The King appeals to the Speaker to ensure that all necessary steps are put in place for its approval when it finally goes to Parliament. A copy of the reviewed constitution was presented to the Speaker for his perusal. “It is our considered opinion that the reviewed tuition would help promote unity, development, and social cohesion in the Kingdom”, Ndan Ya-Naa stated.

Among the steps taken by the Kingdom, the King said, aimed at promoting the development of the area, is the setting up of the Dagbon Development Committee with a Ten-Year Strategic Development Plan. Part of the strategy is the construction of a befitting Gbewaa Palace for the Kingdom. Ndan Ya-Naa said Parliament is an important democratic institution in the governance process of the country, with the responsibility of holding the executive arm in check.
