Incumbent Northern Regional Chairman Wins as New Faces Break Through in NPP Executive Elections
Delegates at the Northern Regional New Patriotic Party (NPP) executive elections have delivered a mixed verdict, retaining incumbent Regional Chairman Mohammed Baatima Adam, popularly known as Samba, while electing new faces to several key executive positions.
A total of 410 delegates were expected to vote, with 397 casting their ballots, representing a turnout of 96.8 percent. Voting ended late Saturday evening.
Mr. Adam retained the chairmanship with 215 votes in a four-way contest. He defeated Inusah Amad, who polled 122 votes, while Fuseini Musah and Salifu A. Rahman Mumin, popularly known as COP Jack Sparrow, obtained 44 and five votes respectively.
While the result secured continuity at the top, delegates voted for significant changes in several other positions.
In the race for First Vice Chairman, Ayamba Yelimagli secured a decisive victory with 270 votes against 117 for incumbent Iddrisu Sunday.
Abdul Rahman Mahama was elected unopposed as Second Vice Chairman.
The Secretary position produced one of the widest margins, with Dr. Abdul Rahman Karim Kpala polling 324 votes to defeat Dr. Fuseini Bawah Zakaria, who obtained 60 votes.
The Deputy Secretary contest was more competitive. Bediako Jeremiah emerged winner with 176 votes, followed by Ahmed King Faisal with 151 votes and Kaleem M. Ibrahim with 60 votes.
The Treasurer’s race was the closest of the elections, with Husseini Abubakari Saddiq edging Mohammed Yussif Toyibu by just one vote. Saddiq secured 175 votes against Toyibu’s 174, while Damba Abdul Rauf polled 37 votes.
There was also a change in the women’s leadership, as Hajia Suraiya Manan emerged victorious in the Women’s Organizer race with 153 votes.
She was followed by Hajia Rashida Abdulai with 105 votes, Alice Dawuni with 91, Hajia Zenabu Sulemana with 30, and Hajia Salamatu A. Rauf with eight votes.
In the Youth Organizer contest, Ibrahim Abdul Aziz secured victory with 170 votes. Mohammed Naporo Abubakari placed second with 137 votes, while Abdul Mutalib Kwayaja Yaatun, Eliasu Iddrisu Obama and Mohammed Naziru Alhassan polled 32, 26 and 22 votes respectively.
Two positions were filled unopposed. Salifu Abdul Rashid, popularly known as COP, was returned as Organizer, while Sayibu Yussif Danjumah was elected Communication Officer.
The Nasara Organizer contest attracted the largest field of candidates. Mohammed Ibrahim emerged winner with 128 votes, followed by Afisheto Muazu with 104 votes. Thabit Ibn Issah polled 48 votes, Dipantiche M. Lukman 42, Saakibu H. Mohammed 39, and Yussif Mozel Alhassan Salman 26 votes.
Party officials said the elections proceeded without any major incident.
The newly elected executives will serve a four-year term and are expected to focus on strengthening the party’s grassroots structures, mobilising supporters and positioning the NPP for the next general election cycle.
The outcome therefore combines continuity in the party’s regional chairmanship with substantial changes across other executive positions, signalling a demand from delegates for both experience and fresh leadership within the Northern Region branch of the party.
