Eight people have now been confirmed dead in a fatal car accident that occurred on the Tamale-Kumbungu road Saturday morning. The dead include a nursing mother with her baby and the two taxi drivers. The accident happened about 10 am at Kanfehiyili in the Tamale-Kumbungu road in the Kumbungu district.
The two taxis collided head-on in the Tamale -Kumbungu road on Saturday morning. The six people died as a result of being trapped and burnt in one of the taxis with registration number GE 7496 Y using LPG gas. For almost six hours, Personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service were still struggling to cut the chassis of the burnt taxi to remove the six bodies trapped in.
Eye witness says the two cabs were over speeding on a dusting road which is under construction.
Four occupants in the other taxi with registration number GR 4860 U who sustained serious injuries are currently receiving treatment at the Tamale Teaching Hospital.
The total number of occupants in the two taxis is not yet clear because eye witnesses suspect they could be more than the required number of five persons supposed to be carried.
Overloading of passengers is common on the Tamale-Kumbungu and Tamale-Savelugu road. The Saturday accident is second on the road after a Tayota pick-up summersaulted on Friday on the same road.
Residents living along the road say drivers plying the road over speed causing worry and fear if the road is tired, it could record more accidents.
Speaking to Zaa News at the accident scene, the Member of Parliament for the area Moses Amadu Yahaya expressed shock at the accident and urged drivers on the road lower their speed.
He said he will liaise with police and the district assemblies to instill discipline on the road before the contractor finishes his work.
