In a delightful spin of events, Hon. Muniru Sugri has been appointed by H.E. John Dramani Mahama to take on the role of Municipal Chief Executive for Yendi. Born in the year when disco was making waves, 1980, to a humble middle-class family, Hon. Sugri’s life journey is like a well-told story, filled with hard work, grit, and a touch of aspiration.
Hon. Sugri kicked off his educational journey at Bagbani Primary School, a quaint little place where children learn to write their letters and add simple numbers. He then made his way to Abatey Junior High School and Dagbong State Senior School, both located in the friendly town of Yendi. His thirst for knowledge led him further to Bagabaga College of Education, Tamale Technical University, University of Education, and the University of Cape Coast, where he proudly earned a master’s degree in project management.
After completing his national service, Hon. Sugri took up the chalk and became a math teacher at SDA Junior High School in Yendi, where he seemed to possess a magical ability to make numbers dance. He climbed the professional ladder with a steady rhythm, first becoming assistant headmaster at Abatey Junior High and later the headmaster of Balogu Primary School. Ever the loyal soul, he returned to Abatey Junior High, this time as their headmaster, where he was greeted with warm smiles and high expectations.
Hon. Sugri was recognized as the best math teacher in the Northern Region. He even took his talents to a national contest in 2018. As headmaster, he displayed an impressive flair for leadership and management that had students singing his praises. Again, Hon. Sugri inspired not just his students but the entire staff, helping them create a lively and positive atmosphere for learning.

Later, Hon. Sugri’s political adventures began in Bagbani, where he was often the voice of his community during visits from politicians, waving his arms to speak on their behalf. He decided to join the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and worked his way up the ladder, holding various interesting titles such as: TEIN Secretary at the University of Education, Kumasi campus, Public Relations Officer at Tamale Technical University, became an Assembly Member for the Malzeri Electoral Area and subsequently appointed as Government Appointee, learning all the ropes of political and assembly dealings. He rose to become a Deputy Secretary, supporting the then NDC Secretary and Party Secretary for two consecutive terms (2018 and 2022), where he mingled closely with the higher-ups in the NDC.
His leadership recognition is something that can be described as an unwavering commitment and his reputation also perched him high in the eyes of the NDC, making him a respected and effective leader. When President John Dramani Mahama appointed him as Municipal Chief Executive for Yendi, it was a clear sign that his influence in local politics was only set to grow.
At 44, Hon. Sugri is a family man, happily married with three children. Known around town for his humility and kindness, he often steps in to ease tensions and broker peace, making reconciliation seem as simple as pie. His warm heart encourages others to embrace these same values, casting a gentle glow of positivity throughout his community. Isn’t that just lovely?
Meanwhile, tomorrow Tuesday, April 15, 2025, all roads lead to the Yendi Community Center as Assembly Members will gather to confirm Hon. Muniru Sugri as the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE). With a promising agenda for development, Hon. Sugri’s leadership is expected to propel the municipality forward for the next four years. As the chief representative of the central government and chairman of the Executive Committee, Hon. Sugri will oversee day-to-day operations and work closely with various departments to drive progress.
The Yendi Municipal Assembly, comprising 44 members, including 30 elected and 14 appointed members, will work together to address key issues affecting the municipality and it is expected that they will join hands to support Hon. Sugri’s vision for a better Yendi Municipality.
Once again, we congratulate Hon. Muniru Sugri on this nomination and wish him best of luck on his tomorrow’s confirmation. May this confirmation mark the beginning of a brighter future for Yendi Municipality.
