Alhaji Lawyer Muhammad Mumuni has been elected as the Council of State Member for the Northern Region, securing 26 votes out of 32 in a decisive victory held at the Northern Regional Residency Pavilion. His closest contender, Richard Andani Yakubu, received 4 votes, while Nyande Abdul Raqib garnered 2 votes, and Adam Hussein did not receive any votes.
Born on July 28, 1949, in Ghana’s Northern Region, Alhaji Muhammad Mumuni pursued his education at the Kumbungu L/A Primary School from 1955 to 1960 and proceeded to Savelugu L/A Middle school from 1960 to 1962. He later attended Tamale Secondary School from 1962 to 1969 and entered the University of Ghana and Ghana Law School for his LL.B (Hons) and postgraduate degree in law (LL.M) between 1969 and 1975. In October 1975, he obtained a BL qualification from the Ghana School of Law.
Alhaji Muhammad Mumuni brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having served as a Minister for Employment and Social Welfare, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, and Secretary-General of the African, Caribbean, and Pacific Group of States (ACP). He was elected Member of Parliament for Kumbungu Constituency for two terms, from 1996 to 2000 and from 2000 to 2004. While in Parliament, he served on various Parliamentary Select and Standing Committees, including the Standing Order Committee, Ranking Member–Committee on Legal, Constitutional and Parliamentary Affairs, and Ranking Member, Judiciary Committee.
He was subsequently appointed the Presidential Running Mate to the Presidential Candidate, Prof J.E.A. Mills, on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), in the 2004 Presidential Elections. Alhaji Muhammad Mumuni has also been a member of the Governing Body of the International Labor Organization (ILO) in Geneva, Switzerland, from 1999 to 2001, and was the President of the 87th Session of the International Labor Conference of the ILO in June 1999.
In addition to his impressive political career, Alhaji Muhammad Mumuni has held various leadership positions in several organizations, including serving as the National President of the Old Tamascans Association from 1985 to 1997, and the National President of the Dagbon Youth Association (DAYA) from 1996 to 1997. He was also the Vice President of the Ghanaian-Danish Communities Association (GDCA) and the Vice-President of the School for Life Project.
Furthermore, Alhaji Muhammad Mumuni was the Founder and Chairman of the Bonzali Rural Bank Ltd from 1990 to 1995, the Chairman of the Amasachina Self–help Association from 1994 to 1997, and the President of the Ghana Bar Association (Northern Region Branch) from 1992 to 1996.
Alhaji Muhammad Mumuni’s diplomatic career includes serving as the Secretary-General of the African, Caribbean, and Pacific Group of States (ACP), and as a member of the Governing Body of the International Labor Organization (ILO) in Geneva, Switzerland, from 1999 to 2001.
With his extensive experience in politics, law, and diplomacy, Alhaji Muhammad Mumuni is poised to make a significant impact as the Council of State Member for the Northern Region.
