NDC Cracks Deepen as Haruna Loyalists Descend on Asiedu Nketia Over Minority Leadership Brouhaha‎‎

Fresh signs of internal tensions within the governing National Democratic Congress have emerged following comments made by the party’s National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, during a visit to the palace of the Chief of Lamashegu in Tamale on Thursday.

‎‎The Chairman’s remarks regarding the controversial removal of former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu and former Minority Chief Whip Muntaka Mubarak from the Minority leadership in Parliament have triggered growing backlash from sections of party supporters, particularly loyalists of Haruna Iddrisu.

‎‎Supporters of the former Minority Leader have begun publicly criticizing and challenging Mr. Asiedu Nketia over what they describe as attempts to justify or rewrite the circumstances surrounding the leadership reshuffle in the 8th Parliament.‎‎

Among the latest voices to respond is Mohammed Hashim, Executive Secretary to Haruna Iddrisu at the Ministry of Education, who accused the NDC Chairman of spreading misinformation about the events that led to Haruna Iddrisu’s removal as Minority Leader.‎‎

According to Mohammed Hashim, party leaders must remain truthful and objective when discussing sensitive internal matters in order to protect party unity and cohesion.

‎‎In a strongly worded response circulated on social media, Hashim cautioned against what he described as propaganda and manipulation of public opinion within the party.

‎‎“Let us promote integrity in our politics and discourage the manipulation of public opinion through falsehoods and propaganda,” he stated.

‎‎He further warned that “agenda building and agenda setting are becoming increasingly visible in our political space, where narratives are carefully crafted by desperate politicians to influence public perception and emotional reactions.”‎‎

Hashim urged party members to remain vigilant and resist attempts to use misinformation to create divisions within the party.‎‎

“A healthy democracy thrives on truth, credibility and honest engagement — not deception, propaganda and calculated distortion of facts to promote narrow leadership interests at the expense of group unity and progress,” portions of his statement read.‎‎

He also cautioned against any attempt to use the NDC platform to create confusion within the administration of President John Dramani Mahama.

‎‎“We must resist the temptation of anyone to use the NDC platform to sow the seed of higgledy-piggledy in the 15-month-old government of President Mahama and the NDC,” he added.

‎‎The latest reaction comes on the heels of similar criticisms from other NDC members and sympathizers following comments allegedly made by Asiedu Nketia during his ongoing “Thank You Tour.”

‎‎Earlier, Suhuyini Yaalana, Northern Regional Deputy Treasurer of the NDC, publicly criticized the Chairman, describing his comments as unnecessary and potentially divisive.‎‎

Yaalana argued that attributing the NDC’s overwhelming victory in the 2024 elections to the removal of Haruna Iddrisu and Muntaka Mubarak was politically flawed and ignored broader national factors, including dissatisfaction with the previous administration of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and controversies surrounding former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.

‎‎In another controversial social media reaction, Abdul-Ganiyu Sandow, believed to be a close supporter of Haruna Iddrisu, also took a swipe at the National Chairman, questioning his claims of influencing appointments within the Mahama administration.‎‎

“Even MIIF CEO self you could not lobby for your own son, you are blowing too much hot air,” Sandow reportedly posted on Facebook.

‎‎Political observers say the escalating exchanges reveal lingering cracks within sections of the NDC over the Minority leadership reshuffle and its political implications.

‎‎While some supporters continue to defend Asiedu Nketia’s strategic decisions, others believe reopening discussions surrounding the issue could undermine internal cohesion and distract the party from governance.‎‎

As of now, the National Chairman has not publicly responded to the growing criticisms from party members and supporters.
