The Movement for Women in Politics, a gender based non-profit organization has congratulated all women in Ghana who won the recently held District Assembly and Unit Committee Level elections.
The movement considers it a brave and courageous step toward taken by all women who contested and won to occupy positions that many in the past thought belong exclusively to men.
A statement issued in Accra and signed by Mrs Emefa Agonyo-Mintah and copied to Zaa News said such moves will erase the long held perception that certain positions in society cannot be handled by women and therefore should be the preserve of men.
The statement further said the decision by the women to contest alone was a signal to the rest of the world that indeed women have a place in society. It believes that the electoral victories will push women to accept the fact that they, too, are capable.
Because of their strong electoral performances, many have argued whether it must be women empowerment at all cost, or whether it is just women who have the zeal and capacity, but whichever way the argument goes, the Movement for Women in Politics believes that so long as society conceives the idea of giving women a chance and encouragement, it washes away the doubt and fear of failure in any woman who has the interest of leading a particular section of society.
For the women who contested and lost in the District Assembly elections in their various districts, the statement said their interest alone in contesting is an encouragement and a good mark towards enhancing democracy in Ghana.
The Movement for Women in Politics further congratulated all women who picked or filed their nominations to contest in the parliamentary primaries of the various political parties in the country.
