Some community members numbering sixty at Bihinaayili in the Savelugu-Nanton Municipality on Thursday benefited from an initiative by Ghana Environmental Management Project (GEMP) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The GEMP initiative dubbed “Village Savings and Loans Association” (VSLA) is intended to help the rural folks to be alleviated from poverty.
The beneficiaries have been members of Tungteeya and Kpangmang Ka Wuni Songda groups. The Savelugu Municipal desk officer of EPA, Lansah A. Abdul-Rahaman who facilitated the activity, advised the people of Bihinaayili to cultivate the habit of savings and remain united at all times. The Northern Regional Director of EPA, Abu Iddrisu spoke to Zaa News on the genesis of GEMP saying it was coordinated by the Canadian government to improve food production and climate change adaptation in ten districts of Northern Region.
The EPA Regional Director explained that VSLA is contribution of monies by the people at their own pace of which they would finally share out and re-invest in their businesses to enhance their well-being.
Mr Abu also enumerated the activities embarked on by GEMP including tree-planting, up-scaling of small ruminants and adaptation to climate. He, therefore, called on the people of Bihinaayili to always conserve the natural environment.
The secretary of the Tungteeya Group, Alhassan Hamza on behalf of the groups expressed his happiness to Zaa news and disclosed that as the rains set in, he will use the money to farm.
The two groups between June, 2014 and May, 2015 generated 13,354.00 Ghana Cedis which was shared out per each person’s contribution.
