The Nanton District Assembly has marked this year’s Mother’s Day celebration with a strong call for the empowerment of women to enhance community and national development.
The event, held on Sunday, May 10, 2026, at Jana in the Nanton District, brought together chiefs, queen mothers, market women, schoolgirls, departmental representatives, and other stakeholders to honour the role of mothers and women in society.

Addressing the gathering, the District Chief Executive for Nanton District, Rosina Zenabu Abdul Rahaman, described the celebration as an important step toward recognizing the immense contributions women continue to make to the development of Ghana despite the many challenges and responsibilities they face.
According to her, women work tirelessly to provide food, shelter, education, and care for their families while also contributing significantly to community growth and national progress.
She noted that the celebration, held under the theme “Empowering Mothers for Community and National Development,” was timely and relevant because mothers are not only caregivers but also key drivers of development.
“When mothers are empowered socially, economically, and educationally, families prosper, communities become stronger, and national development is accelerated,” she emphasized.
Hon. Rosina Zenabu Abdul Rahaman described mothers as the backbone of every family and the foundation of every strong society, adding that their hard work, patience, love, and guidance continue to shape the future of the nation.
She further stated that empowering women, particularly widows and single mothers, would bring enormous benefits to both the Nanton District and the country at large. The DCE explained that economically empowered women are better positioned to support their families, reduce poverty, establish small businesses, and contribute to local economic growth. She added that educated and empowered mothers place greater value on the education and wellbeing of their children, thereby helping to build a stronger future generation.
She also highlighted the important roles women play in agriculture, trade, healthcare, education, and local governance, stressing that empowered mothers help promote peace, unity, discipline, and moral values within homes and communities.
Hon. Rosina assured participants that the assembly remains committed to initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of women and vulnerable groups in the district.

“We will continue to support programmes that promote vocational training, entrepreneurship, girls’ education, maternal healthcare, and economic empowerment for widows and single mothers,” she said.
She further appealed to development partners, traditional authorities, religious bodies, and civil society organisations to continue supporting women-focused initiatives to improve livelihoods and create opportunities for mothers to become financially independent and socially empowered.
The DCE also encouraged mothers to continue supporting one another and working hard to strengthen their families and communities.
“As we celebrate this Mother’s Day, let us recommit ourselves to building a society where every mother is respected, protected, supported, and empowered to achieve her full potential,” she concluded.
The guest speaker for the occasion, Rev. Dr. Mrs. Clementine Odei, advised women to support their husbands in raising responsible children who would become productive members of society.
She further urged mothers to work together with men to promote harmony and growth within families, while encouraging women across the country to remain hardworking and responsible in order to earn respect in society.
The celebration featured presentations from traditional authorities and interactive discussions on the role of mothers as leaders in promoting community and national development.
The event ended in an atmosphere of joy, unity, and appreciation as participants shared moments of celebration in honour of mothers across the district.
