Northern Regional Minister Clarifies Misleading Claims On Meeting With Zabzugu Chiefs

0

The Northern Regional Minister has refuted claims that he asked the people of Zabzugu to provide evidence in court to prove who was responsible for the killing of the late Mbe Mumuni.

In a statement issued by his office, the Minister clarified that his discussion with the chiefs and the Northern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) focused on reaffirming the government’s commitment to ensuring justice. He emphasized that security matters related to the incident are under the jurisdiction of REGSEC, specifically the Regional Crime Office.

However, misinformation circulated on social media, alleging that the Minister had stated that the people of Zabzugu would have to present evidence in court. The Minister has categorically denied these claims.

The statement urged community members, especially the youth, to rely on verified information and refrain from spreading false narratives that could escalate tensions. “Spreading misleading information only fuels unnecessary tensions,” the statement cautioned.

The clarification comes in the wake of concerns raised by the Elders of the Yelizoli Traditional Area, who summoned the youth of Zabzugu to address the Minister’s remarks. The community expressed frustration over what they perceive as selective justice, citing past conflicts between Konkombas and Chakosis in Chereponi, as well as Konkombas and Dagombas in Sanbu-Zogbei, which did not lead to court cases.

They insisted that Zabzugu should not be the first community to face legal proceedings over a tribal dispute.

In response, the Northern Regional Minister has called for calm, assuring the people of Zabzugu that the government remains committed to ensuring justice.

For further clarification, the public has been advised to contact the following chiefs who attended the REGSEC meeting in Tamale: Yelzoli Laagban-Lana, Gor-Lana, Pol-Naa, and Yelzoli-Lana Secretary.
