Northern NPP Concerned Youth Group Condemns Dr. Bryan Acheampong Over Ethnic Campaign Comments

The Northern NPP Concerned Youth Group based in Tamale has strongly condemned what it describes as an “ethnic bigotry campaign” allegedly spearheaded by one of the party’s presidential hopefuls, Dr. Bryan Acheampong.

Speaking at a press conference, the group expressed displeasure over comments attributed to Dr. Acheampong in a circulating video, where he reportedly urged delegates to reject former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on the grounds of the NPP’s performance in the Bawku enclave, citing the long-standing Mamprusi-Kusasi conflict.

The youth group described the comments as “unguided” and warned that such utterances could derail the progress the NPP has made in the five northern regions. They argued that the remarks were “distasteful, unwarranted and politically unwise,” given the sensitive nature of the Bawku conflict, which has recently escalated beyond the Upper East Region.

“The NPP, as a national party, abhors discriminatory political discussions and embraces all manner of people irrespective of religious and ethnic backgrounds,” the statement read. The group further stressed that the party’s constitution does not make ethnicity a criterion for leadership, insisting that internal contests should be based on ideas and policies.

They credited Dr. Bawumia for significantly boosting the party’s fortunes in northern Ghana, adding that his leadership and campaign efforts were unmatched in the Fourth Republic. According to the group, the party’s 2024 electoral defeat was influenced by several factors beyond the former vice president’s control.

The youth group accused Dr. Acheampong of engaging in “dangerous politics of division” and demanded an unqualified apology, warning that his comments risk damaging the party’s unity and electoral prospects.

“We take Dr. Bryan Acheampong’s ethnic bigotry campaign as an insult to the intelligence of well-meaning Ghanaians and the rank and file of the party,” the group said, urging party stalwarts to refrain from using ethnic and chieftaincy sentiments for political gain.
