Stakeholders map up strategy to protect water bodies in Zabzugu

The Zabzugu District Assembly in collaboration with the World Food Programme (WFP) are mapping up strategies to protect the Zabzugu dam which is the only source of water for Zabzugu and its surrounding communities.  The two bodies have  set up a monitoring team made up of community members and some assembly men to curtail the throwing of waste into dam as well as cleaning the surroundings of the dam.  The team’s responsibility among other things was to ensure that, there are proper sanitary practices at the dam site.  The WFP had also donated some food stuffs to the assembly to be distributed to people who are committed in keeping the dam site tidy as way of motivation.  This follows appeals to the assembly by some residents to protect the only dam serving Zabzugu and its environs. The District Chief Executive for Zabzugu Abdul-Wab Umar who disclosed this to Zaa News in Zabzugu said, the assembly in addition to team, intends to employ a care taker to guide people on how to fetch without necessarily entering into the dam. The DCE said, all stakeholders in the area are monitory the activities at dam site and are making frantic effort to ensure that the dam is well protected to prevent the people in the area from  contracting combinable disease like typhoid and cholera. According to the DCE, the assembly as part of its effort to protect dam is embarking on vigorous educational campaign in the communities to sensitize the people on the need to practice to clean the dam site periodical and   the need to protect the environment, especially water bodies.  He added that, plans are far advance to maintain the banks of dam to prevent running water from entering into the dam during this raining season. Some residents who spoke to Zaa News lauded the stakeholders effort in the sector and called on them to expedite action to avert the out break of any epidemic  in the area.
