Residents of Vittin, a suburb of Tamale have threatened not to vote in the 2012 elections if government failed to provide them with some social amenities.
The residents mentioned electricity, potable drinking water and toilet facilities as some of the basic amenities they lacked in the area and therefore resolved not to take part in any political activities this year.
At a meeting with the Tamale Metropolitan Coordinating Director on Thursday the residents said they have been deprived of their share of the national cake and threatened to chase politicians away from the area should they fail to provide them with their needs.
The women’s leader or Magaziya of the area, Fati Mahama lamented over what she described as continued embarrassment of women in the area due to the absence of toilet facilities and said they attended to nature’s call in the open.
She warned that the women would resist any attempt by politicians to campaign in the area.
The residents who were led by the area chairman, Mahamadu Amidu recounted their ordeal in accessing the basic social amenities and appealed to the assembly to immediately address the problem.
But the Coordinating Director of the assembly, John Atuguba urged them to exercise patients while the assembly took steps to provide them with those needs.
Mr Atuguba said the metropolis was one of the 20 districts benefiting from a water expansion project and added a contract had been awarded for the extension of water and electricity to parts of the metropolis and Vittin electoral area has been earmark for the projects.
He also assured the residents that the assembly would help provide electric poles for the extension of electricity to all parts in the area. On places of convenience, Mr Atuguba said there was a project to construct toilets for schools and urged the residents to liaise with the beneficiary schools in the area for the use of the facility. ]]>
