Gov't signed Tamale housing unit MOU with Pomptech

Government has signed a Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) with the Pomptech technology, a private housing company for the construction of twenty one thousand six hundred housing unit (21,600) at Lahagu in the Tamale metropolis. 
The MOU  was signed at the temporary office of the ministry of Local Government and Rural Development in the northern regional coordinating council Tuesday, 3 February 2015. A deputy local government minister,Mr Nii Lantey Vanderpuye signed for the ministry while Mr Osman Shahanu initiate for Pomptech. 
Under the agreement, Pomptech is expected to use its local technology to construct the 21,600 housing units by the end of 2015. 
the project has a first installment of 200 bed-room incremental housing units and subsequently, additional 1,000 per year for the next 4 years.
The ministry relocated to Tamale ahead of the national sanitation exercise which comes off February 7.
The local government minister, Mr Julius Debra  who witnessed the signing ceremony together with some directors at the ministry lauded the Tamale metropolitan assembly initiative and urged all assemblies in the country to adopt the housing unit in their areas. 
He said the ministry will ensure that Tamale housing unit be replicated to other regions with the bran name 'Tamale affordable housing unit'.  
Beneficiaries of the units are mainly recognized groups such the Tamale Cooperative Credit Union (TCCU). 
TCCU in 2013 reached an agreement with Water and Sanitation for West Africa, a pan-African intergovernmental organization and the Credit Union Association of Tamale for to construct 200 houses for its members.
The assembly bought into the idea 
Explaining the affordability of houses, Mr Debra said two bed room will cost twenty thousand Ghana cedis and interested groups are expected to use seven years to pay.
Mr Debra described the project as one of the best in the country which can help Ghana address the housing deficit.  
On why government not continuing similar housing projects by the previous government,  Mr Debra explained that the Tamale affordable housing was different from other housing schemes and as asocial democratic government it was necessary to give attention to locally oriented scheme.
