Workers in the country have pledged their support to the major stakeholders towards ensuring peace in the up coming general elections. The workers say Ghanaians have a collective responsibility to protect Ghana’s democracy and called on the citizenry to help maintain the country’s elections and our international reputation. The Acting Northern Regional Secretary of Trade Union Congress, Alhaji Ahmed Adam made the pledge on behalf of the Ghana Trade Union Congress (TUC) Secretary General, Kofi Asamoah in Tamale to mark this year’s May Day celebration on the theme “ Election 2012, the role of workers in securing peaceful and fair election’’. The workers also reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring that, Ghana is governed democratically to enable the citizenry, irrespective of their tribe, religion to exercise their franchise. The Organized Labour of the TUC further pledged to remain nonpartisan in the presidential and parliamentary elections, adding it will maintain a prominent voice in the national effort towards free, fair and transparent elections 2012. The workers say they will organize to resist any attempt by any group or persons that intend to subvert the current democratic dispensation or threaten the peace Ghana is currently enjoying. The workers also called on government, electoral commission, civil society organizations and the media to exhibit maturity, fairness and transparency in the electoral process. The Acting General Secretary commended government for the highest economic growth and called for policies that will create decent jobs for young people from the various tertiary institutions in the country. The TUC says the high economic growth has failed to create jobs because, growth polices are based on the exploitation of natural resources which do not create jobs. The manufacturing sector, according to the TUC, has declined by about 15 percent in 2011. The TUC has therefore blamed policy markers for failing to address the monumental challenges confronting domestic industry compelling manufacturing firms to convert factories into warehouses. The Northern Regional Minister, Moses Bukari Mabengba commended organized labour for their hard work and sacrifice over the years towards the growth of Ghana’s economy under trying conditions. He appealed to workers to continue to be dedicated to duty, remain focus and let unity be their guiding principles. Mr Mabengba said government is committed to ensuring that all workers enjoy the single spine salary structure. The minister reiterated government’s determination to conduct clean and credible elections. In all twelve deserving workers received various items including refrigerators, laptops and mobile phones for their hard work and dedication to the public service.
