The race for the Northern Regional Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is heating up with the entry of a new, dynamic contender: Dr. Abdul Rahaman Karim Kpala. A respected academic and long-standing party strategist, Dr. Kpala has officially thrown his hat into the ring, promising to inject fresh energy and vision into the party’s leadership in the region.

In what many see as a well-calculated but timely move, Dr. Kpala’s announcement is stirring excitement across party ranks.

A source close to the aspirant tells ZAANewsroom that his decision to contest stems from a “deep-seated commitment to the NPP’s values” and a desire to “apply his vast experience in political communication and organizational leadership to reinvigorate the party at the regional level.”

Dr. Kpala brings with him a formidable blend of academic and political credentials. Rising from humble beginnings in Yendi, he climbed the academic ladder through Vittin Senior High School to the University for Development Studies (UDS), where he earned a Bachelor’s in Agricultural Science Education, an MPhil in Horticulture, and a Ph.D. in Agricultural Science Education. Currently serving as Head of the Department of Agricultural and Consumer Science Education at UDS, he is widely respected for his leadership in academia and beyond.

Beyond the classroom, Dr. Kpala is no stranger to the inner workings of party politics. He has been a senior figure on the NPP Northern Regional Communications Team and played a key role on the party’s Regional Campaign Team during the 2024 elections. His reputation for mobilizing grassroots support and crafting strategic communication plans has earned him admiration from both party insiders and constituents.

In his official declaration, Dr. Kpala lauded the current Regional Secretary, Prof. Hudu Zakaria, for his “exemplary leadership and enduring legacy.” He vowed to build on this foundation by strengthening party structures, deepening unity, and enhancing stakeholder engagement across all levels.

“As Regional Secretary, my mission will be clear: to unify, to organize, and to communicate,” Dr. Kpala stated. “We must build a party machinery that is robust, responsive, and reflective of the aspirations of our grassroots.”

Political watchers say his entry could energize the NPP base in the region, which remains a pivotal area for the party’s national ambitions. As the party gears up for its next internal contests, Dr. Kpala’s mix of scholarly discipline, political acumen, and strategic vision positions him as a frontrunner in what is expected to be a closely watched race.

His candidacy now awaits the support of key party stakeholders — from the Regional Executive Committee and Constituency Executives to Electoral Area Coordinators, TESCON branches, and Polling Station Executives.

For many delegates, the question is no longer whether Dr. Kpala is qualified, but whether his leadership style is what the region needs at this critical juncture.
