Tamale, Northern Region — July 18, 2025

In a landmark move to enhance educational access and empower the youth of Zabzugu, the District Chief Executive (DCE), Hon. George Lakoba Tanie, has initiated a strategic tour of tertiary institutions across the Eastern Corridor of the Northern Region.

The tour, aimed at securing admission slots for qualified students from the Zabzugu District, has seen the DCE engaging directly with principals and administrators of leading health and teacher training colleges. Among the institutions visited so far are the Nkanchina College of Community Health Nursing in Kpandai, the Gushegu Midwifery Training College, the College of Health Sciences in Yendi, and the E.P. College of Education in Bimbilla.

At the E.P. College of Education, Hon. Tanie was joined by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Bimbilla. The two executives held a high-level meeting with the college’s principal to explore support for Zabzugu applicants, especially in the field of teacher education and training.

This initiative has resonated deeply within the Zabzugu community, with many lauding the DCE’s proactive leadership and hands-on approach. “Waow, what a history that has been made again,” remarked Mr. Dakpe Paul, Deputy Constituency Organizer of the Zabzugu Constituency. “The DCE of Yelzoli has taken it upon himself to personally tour tertiary institutions to secure admissions for his people. This is not just talk — it is action.”

The effort, according to observers, signals a shift from rhetoric to results in tackling one of the region’s most pressing challenges — limited access to higher education due to geographical, financial, and institutional barriers.

“The Zabzugu District Assembly will continue engaging the visited institutions to finalize the number of admission slots available and streamline the application process for eligible students,” Mr. Paul added. “The DCE has also indicated plans to support successful applicants with the necessary guidance and logistics to ensure they are not only admitted, but are also able to enroll and succeed.”

Hon. George Lakoba Tanie’s education-focused tour is part of a broader vision to harness the power of education as a tool for transformation, empowerment, and long-term development in the Zabzugu District. As he continues his engagements across the corridor, hopes are high that many young lives will be positively impacted through this timely and strategic intervention.
