Shea Producers Call for Engagement on 24-Hour Economy Implementation

0

Shea nut producers in the Northern Region have urged the 24-Hour Economy Secretariat to engage with the Ghana Shea Employers Association to ensure the successful implementation of the program.

The producers believe that the government’s flagship initiative will alleviate the suffering of thousands of women in the informal sector, particularly those in the shea value chain.

On their challenges, the Shea Producers highlighted several challenges, including limited access to finance, high prices of processing equipment, and lack of protection for local producers.

They have also expressed concerns about the export of raw shea nuts, which could undermine the local industry.

The producers at a news conference in Tamale call for support from the government, including subsidies for processing equipment and access to low-interest loans.

They have also appealed to the government to consider the needs of shea processors and producers in the implementation of the 24-Hour Economy program.

Commenting on measures introduced by the government to regulate the shea industry, including a licensing system and a ban on the export of raw shea nuts for the 2026 season, Executive member of the association, Mr Dokurugu Andrew Yahaya welcomed these initiatives but notes that local producers need financial support to stock sufficient raw materials and stay in business throughout the year.

“We don’t have financial muscle as local producers and actors in the industry like the foreigners. Unlike countries like the U.S where flexible and low-interest rate loans are given to small enterprises, in our case the banks are demanding collateral,” said Hajia Mary Naab, a shea producer.

The producers believe that with the right support and engagement, the 24-Hour Economy program can benefit the shea industry and improve the livelihoods of thousands of women in the informal sector.
