Six Dead, Several Injured in Stampede at Ghana Armed Forces Recruitment Exercise

Tamale N/R, November 12, 2025 — A tragic stampede occurred early Wednesday morning at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra during the 2025/2026 Ghana Armed Forces recruitment exercise, leaving six applicants dead and several others injured.

According to a statement issued by the Department of Public Relations of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), the incident happened around 6:20 a.m. when an unexpected surge of applicants breached security barriers and forced their way into the stadium before the scheduled screening could begin.

Preliminary reports indicate that a total of 28 casualties were recorded, including six deaths, while five persons remain in critical condition at the 37 Military Hospital. Twelve others sustained fairly critical injuries and are also receiving medical attention.

Brigadier General Evelyn Abraham-Kwabiah, Commander of the 37 Military Hospital, confirmed that emergency medical teams are working tirelessly to stabilise those affected.

“The Ghana Armed Forces deeply regrets this unfortunate occurrence and extends its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased while wishing a speedy recovery to the injured,” the statement said.

Authorities have initiated investigations into the circumstances surrounding the stampede and are making arrangements to notify the families of the victims.

The Ghana Armed Forces assured the public that further updates will be communicated as investigations progress.
