Northern Regional Minister, Mr Salifu Saeed has called on the Ghana Immigration Service to intensify public education of both regular and irregular migration by young people.
Mr Saeed said people in the region need to be educated more on opportunities available in the north and the dangers associated with irregular migration.
Speaking at the opening of second Migration Information Center in Tamale, Mr Saeed expressed worry about young people’s continued engagement in dangerous journeys without recourse to the dangers associated with them.
The establishment of the center, the minister said, was timely because young people still migrate from northern Ghana either externally or internally in search of non-existing jobs.
He described the establishment of the center as some of the dividends of peace and called on everyone to embrace peace.
He revealed that he nearly became a migrant after his secondary school but with perseverance and determination, he remained in Ghana contributing his quota.
He tasked all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in the region to include migration issues in their public engagements.
He also entreated parents to be very careful with people pretending to facilitate their traveling outside Ghana.
He appealed to the MMDCEs and the GIS to make good use of both local radio and TV stations to educate the public about the dangers associated with irregular migration.
The minister on behalf of the president thanked the Spanish government for good bilateral relation existing between Ghana and Spain.
