The Deputy Minister for women and children’s affairs Hajia Boya Hawawu Gariba has called on all stakeholders and well meaning Ghanaians to get involve in getting females enrolled and retained in school.
She said there is evidence of a widespread gender disparity between enrollment and retention of girls and boys at all levels especially in education.
She was speaking on the occasion of the second speech and prize –giving day of Tamale Girls Senior High School (Pagnaa) over the weekend. Hajia Boya advised the students to attach more seriousness to their studies to become women of substance in future.
The headmistress of the school Hajia Mariatu Mohammed appealed to government to help provide the school with more infrastructure to accommodate both teachers and students, saying there is congestion in the classrooms and dormitories. Hajia Mariatu said the school needs a reasonable number of resident teachers to help maintain discipline among students.
She did not say how many. She mentioned the lack of a library as one of the major set backs facing the school.
The headmistress also appealed to the ministry of sports to help the school with a field for sporting activities.
Hajia Mariatu thanked the Ghana education service and the chiefs and people of Wamale and all those who contributed in making Tamale Girls SHS what it is currently.
The northern regional minister in a speech read for him promised the school a modern ICT center by the end of 2012. The school’ cadet corps was inaugurated.
The occasion was under the theme: educating the girl child for development, the role of Tamale Girls Senior High School.
The school which was established in 1998 with 64 girls now has a student population of over thousand five hundred. ]]>
