In a significant move to enhance maternal healthcare in the northern region, the government has launched a groundbreaking project to establish a Fistula Holding Ward at the Yendi Government Hospital. Northern Regional Minister. Ali Adolf John, who represented President John Mahama, cut the sod for the project, emphasizing its importance in restoring dignity and hope for women afflicted with obstetric fistula.

“This project is a bold and transformative step towards bridging the healthcare gap for women in rural and underserved communities,” Hon. Ali Adolf stated. “It’s a significant milestone in our quest to improve maternal healthcare services and ensure that no woman suffers from the debilitating effects of fistula.”

The initiative aims to provide specialized care, psychological support, and social reintegration for women affected by obstetric fistula. The project has already shown promise, with 22 fistula repair surgeries performed at Yendi Government Hospital and 9 cases handled at Tamale West Hospital in 2024.

According to him, “This project is a testament to our government’s commitment to prioritizing the health and wellbeing of our citizens, particularly women and children. We recognize the importance of addressing the healthcare needs of our people and are dedicated to making quality healthcare accessible to all.”

The project aligns with the NDC Government’s health manifesto, prioritizing universal health coverage and equitable healthcare services. By increasing access to healthcare, this initiative strives to reduce health inequities, particularly in rural areas.

Hon. Ali Adolf urged stakeholders to intensify efforts in encouraging regular antenatal care visits, timely referrals for safe deliveries, community education, and advocacy for women’s health rights. He acknowledged the contributions of UNFPA, Qatar Charity-Ghana, and other partners, emphasizing the importance of collective action in transforming Ghana’s healthcare landscape.

“The success of this project relies on the collective efforts of all stakeholders,” Hon. John noted. “We must work together to ensure that our healthcare system is equitable, accessible, and responsive to the needs of all our citizens.”
