Nurse appeals for support for two children needing life-saving surgeries

A 36-year-old nurse and mother of two, Mammah Samiratu, is appealing to the general public, philanthropists and benevolent organizations to support the medical treatment of her two children, both of whom are battling congenital health conditions requiring urgent surgery.

According to Ms. Samiratu, her first child, a six-year-old boy, was born with a hole in the heart, a congenital condition that affects blood flow and proper heart function.

Doctors, she said, have estimated the cost of the surgery at about GHC200,000. Her second child, a seven-days-old, was also born with a congenital abnormality and requires more than GHC20,000 to undergo corrective surgery.

Narrating her ordeal, Ms. Samiratu explained that the burden of caring for the children has become overwhelming, especially as her husband has been incapacitated for more than a year and is unable to support the family financially.

She disclosed that several attempts to seek assistance from individuals, institutions and philanthropists have so far yielded little results.

Ms. Samiratu expressed appreciation to philanthropist Dr Nathaniel Adams for his support and efforts toward helping the children receive treatment. According to her, aside from her monthly salary as a nurse, she has no other source of income to cater for the medical expenses and welfare of the family.

She is therefore appealing to the public and charitable organizations to come to the aid of her children to enable them to undergo the life-saving surgeries and improve their quality of life.
